SUMMARY:Integrating EMDR and Couples Therapy
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the integration of EMDR therapy into couples therapy\, addressing \nthe challenges therapists face when combining these modalities. A dialectical theory of \nrelationships will be described\, highlighting fusion and pathological dependency as \nfoundations of couples’ conflicts. The workshop emphasizes bringing individual focus into \nsystemically informed couples therapy\, utilizing insights from individual psychotherapy\, \nincluding EMDR. Participants will learn to integrate individual and systemic dimensions\, \naddressing horizontal (current patterns) and vertical (historical influences) axes of inquiry. \nParticipants will learn about forms of pathological dependency in couples and a 5-step \nmethod for transitioning from horizontal to vertical assessment. DESCRIPTION:EMDR for Parts Integration with I-Gaze (13 CEs)  \nDay 1: \nThis section describes the core elements of the relationship that constitute deconstructing the building blocks of the Self. By understanding these core elements\, clinicians have a roadmap for knowing when to listen and when to speak with attunement and authenticity\, as well as how to deconstruct relational impasses that impair trust. We also explore attachment\, identity formation\, and the relationship between family dynamics and ego structure. This section describes the bridge between pathogenic family dynamics and dissociative personality structure and its ensuing relational manifestations. \nDay 2: \nParticipants learn a model for EMDR-based assessment and treatment planning with the author’s Domains of Self Experience model. Next\, participants will learn a progression of phase four and somatic techniques to control and focus desensitization within the optimal zone of arousal—a signal contribution of the presenter. Participants will learn the Eye-Zone Differential technique for efficient\, neuropsychologically based ego state therapy. Finally\, participants will learn and practice a new and powerful method for attachment repair: The I-Gaze Interweave. DESCRIPTION:This workshop will describe an EMDR-based approach to couples therapy\, combining individual and systemic ideas. Dysfunctional patterns of relating in the family of origin can imprint themselves on the relational template of adults\, only to be re-enacted in the contemporary couple’s relationship. Because EMDR can effectively transform these earlier relational traumas\, adults can become less reactive\, enjoy greater distress tolerance\, and have a more resilient ego boundary.
